China Netcom to beam 2008 Beijing Regatta
By Zhang Yu’an (China Daily)

?

QINGDAO: China Netcom has vowed to build the world’s most advanced
telecommunications network for the Sailing Regatta of the Beijing 2008
Olympic Games.

Qingdao, a coastal city of East China’s Shandong Province, will host the
regatta and China Netcom (CNC), a leading fixed-line carrier in the
country, is an Official Partner of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

General manager of CNC’s Qingdao Branch Wang Zhili said his company was
well prepared to provide secure and highly efficient services including
high-speed networks, broadband access and high-tech systems during the
regatta.

The company has invested heavily in planning and infrastructure at the
sailing base and related facilities.

The telecom facilities include trunk telecom lines, a landing station for
the East Asia Crossing (EAC) submarine cable system and an upgrade of the
IP’s local network and main exchange stations.

A newly laid submarine cable linking the Qingdao landing station with the
EAC submarine cable system, for instance, has a transmission capacity of
40G.

As the northernmost landing site for China, the Qingdao landing station
has halved the distance between Chinese cities and that of Japan and
South Korea. Therefore, the submarine cable system will guarantee high
quality, live audio/video transmission for the sailing regatta of the
Games to the world.

Zang Aimin, executive vice-president of the Sailing Committee of the
Beijing Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games, said that the landing
of the EAC submarine cable system in Qingdao ensured a highly advanced
digital coverage.

China Netcom Qingdao Branch is also the only local telecom operator to
have tested the TD-SCDMA network, China’s third generation (3G) mobile
telecommunication technology.

Wang said Qingdao had the largest and most complicated test network among
three across the country.

To date, the company has completed construction of the 3G business
platforms.

Wang said that being the fixed line telecommunication partner of the
Sailing Regatta of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games had also helped his
company raise its profile in the city.

This has helped it accelerate the launch of more new products covering
government and community information services, call centers for leading
local and international companies, and information services for remote
rural areas as well as small and medium enterprises.

Recreation – One year and counting…

Chinadaily.com.cn sharing the Olympic spirit

===========================================================================

One year and counting…
(China Daily)
Updated: 2007-08-08 15:38

?

Overseers of all major competitive events are chosen.

Scenarios for both the opening and closing ceremonies are done.

Except for the ultra-modern main stadium, which needs special
modification for the opening ceremony, all Games venues will be completed
by year’s end.

In the meantime, food safety and traffic control programs are already on
the drawing board.

Preparations for the 2008 summer Olympics appear exceptionally well today
as Beijing marks the one-year countdown to the world’s most celebrated
sporting fiesta.

Given the city’s and the country’s growing financial prowess, and the
exceptional rallying power of the widely shared Olympic dream in this
country, there is little doubt about Beijing’s capabilities for
delivering what it promised to the International Olympics Committee. The
city is actually investing more than is necessary for the Games.

In addition to brand-new Games venues, the city is managing an all-round
facelift to match its coveted image as an international metropolis. Roads
are being widened or repaved. Old buildings are being whitewashed. New
gardens are being added at street corners.

With a full year to go before the big day, the Games’ organizers and
urban planners have enough time to do the cosmetics. But a successful
Olympics entails more than all that.

The recent downpours in Beijing are an embarrassing warning against blind
optimism about the city’s contingency plans.

For one thing, the city’s underground drainage system turned out to be
disappointingly inadequate. So was the authorities’ response. Deep pools
emerged at major crossroads and flyovers on the city’s major roads,
literally cutting off traffic for long hours. Without major operations on
the current network, there is no guarantee such incidents will not be
repeated next summer.

We share the organizing authorities’ concern about Beijing residents’
manner problems. A more pressing imperative, however, is to upgrade the
municipal authorities’ competence for coordinating the
sometimes-conflicting needs of the Games and normal local life.

For instance, it is easy to impose strict traffic control schemes. But it
takes a lot more deliberation if convenience and satisfaction of all
parties is taken into consideration.

One year may be more than enough for the construction part, but barely
enough for the rest.

And the latter will prove to be equally, if not more, important.

Good luck Beijing.

Finance – Indonesia offers to help mediate Iran nuclear issue

WORLD / Middle East

Indonesia offers to help mediate Iran nuclear issue
(Reuters)
Updated: 2006-05-10 14:57

Indonesia, which has good relations with Iran and its critics, has
offered to help mediate the Islamic republic’s stand-off with the United
States and other countries over its nuclear programme.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (R) greets visiting Iranian
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta May 10,
2006. Indonesia greeted Ahmadinejad with a 21-gun salute on Wednesday as
he began meetings overshadowed by the Islamic republic’s controversial
nuclear policies. [Reuters]

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, asked by reporters on
Wednesday what role Indonesia could play on the issue, said: “We can
cooperate well in reducing the tension and move toward continuing talks
and negotiations.”

He was speaking after a meeting visiting Iranian President Mahmoud
Ahmadinejad.

Presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal said “Iran was very receptive”
to Indonesia’s offer to help mediate.

“We hope it will happen. We need to breathe new life into negotiations,”
he said.

Media – What does blog power hold in store ?

Chinadaily.com.cn sharing the Olympic spirit

What does blog power hold in store ?
By Gu Wen (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-08-02 14:11

?

Late one night several weeks ago, my cell phone beeped with a message
from a retired two-time Olympic gold medalist: “I have just updated my
blog. Please take a look. Thanks.”

I thought it would be just another entry in her Web diary about her life
as a social celebrity in Beijing, such as photos of her posing with
several attractive artistes after a sponsored badminton game. So I
decided to see it some time later. I had been a long, rough day and it
was time to hit the hay.

Over the next couple of days I totally forgot about the Olympic
champion’s Web journal, until I learned from newspaper reports that she
had just revealed on her blog her lawsuit against a local publisher,
which had allegedly failed to pay her royalties for her best-selling
autobiography.

She had declined interview requests from news media as she referred
reporters to her blog, where she had already said all she could say. Some
newspapers later picked up her postings and ran with them.

In her latest entry, she announced that the publisher had now offered to
pay her the full royalties, but added that she would not accept them
without a formal apology.

As I read through her accounts of the legal battle that she had written
for her fans and journalists, I couldn’t help but marvel at the media
power of the blog, a mixture of diary and commentary that comes with full
text, video and audio functions.

It may have taken weeks or months for her to air her grievances in the
traditional news media. But her blog allowed her to post her thoughts and
opinions immediately and receive instant feedback from readers. It is
unsurprising that many blog postings have grown into national media
events overnight.

Another more famous example is Ai Dongmei, a former marathon champion who
has just reached an out-of-court settlement with her coach, who she
accused of withholding her salary and winnings.

In April this year, with no money and no job, Ai announced on her blog
that she would be selling her medals to make ends meet. This caused a
national stir after the traditional media reported her online offer.

However, this kind of “blog power” can also have unintended consequences.
International Olympic Committee officials may become more wary of the
prospect of athlete bloggers serving as reporters or news commentators on
the sidelines of their competitions, something they wouldn’t want to see
at any Games.

I have browsed through the Web diaries of some potential Beijing
Olympians, including two Athens gold medalists and several medal hopefuls
who have yet to cut their teeth at the Games. Except for a few
tit-for-tat interactions between Web surfers – one gymnast found it
necessary to respond to disrespectful comments on photos of his
girlfriend with sarcasm – they mostly focus on details such as training
and daily life, avoiding anything more controversial than this.

These athlete bloggers have recently made arrangements with China’s
largest portals, which offer various incentives ranging from paying for
content to providing online editorial support, if the athletes join their
virtual communities.

If athletes are officially allowed to blog during the Beijing Games,
which would set a new precedent in Olympic history, there will probably
be strings attached, such as their being told to avoid causing any
controversy or avoid posting photos, videos or audio files they take
themselves at the Games, to protect the rights of accredited journalists.

It remains anybody’s guess how blog power will actually be harnessed
during the Beijing Games, as the International Olympic Committee has yet
to reach a consensus on the issue, according to informed sources.

Business Blog – West softens UN draft on Iran

WORLD / Top News

West softens UN draft on Iran
(Reuters)
Updated: 2006-03-29 09:33

Western powers softened a draft U.N. Security Council statement on
Tuesday on reining in Iran’s nuclear ambitions in hopes of reaching a
deal this week.

Still, the new draft retains calls on Tehran to suspend
uranium-enrichment efforts, a process that can produce fuel necessary for
making a nuclear bomb.

The text deletes language on several specific demands. Instead it refers
only to the number of the resolution that contained them and was adopted
by the International Atomic Energy Agency board in Vienna, the U.N.
nuclear watchdog.

Britain and France, authors of the draft backed by the United States,
distributed the document, their third revision, to the full 15-nation
U.N. Security Council for discussion on Wednesday, three weeks after
talks began.

“We have reached agreement on the bulk of the text, so there was movement
on all sides, and now we need to see whether we can cross this last
bridge but we’re very close,” U.S. Ambassador John Bolton told reporters.

Ambassadors from the United States, Britain, France, Russia and China,
permanent council members with veto power, met three times on Tuesday on
the Iran research programs, which Tehran says are for peaceful purposes
but the West believes are a cover for atomic-bomb making.

Bolton and British Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry said there were still one
or two issues outstanding.

The main one was a provision that referred to weapons of mass destruction
as a threat to international peace and security. Russia believes this
could be a prelude to harsher punishment, diplomats said.

But Moscow has not yet agreed to the new language in Tuesday’s draft.
This recalls its (the Security Council’s) primary responsibility for the
maintenance of international peace and security, Russia said,

Somewhat exasperated, Bolton said, “I am confident that the Security
Council, under the (U.N.) Charter, has a responsibility for the
maintenance of international peace and security, and I am not worried
about saying it.”

“We have been incredibly flexible. Incredibly flexible. I probably have
never been more flexible,” Bolton said.

Another unsolved issue, China said, was the how long the director of the
IAEA, Mohamed ElBaradei had to report to the council on whether Iran had
complied with its demands.

The original text said 14 days while the new text refers to 30 days.
Russia had proposed until June. China’s U.N. Ambassador Wang Guangya told
reporters the timeline had not been agreed yet.

Leggings

Updated: 2007-07-30 16:46

Several years ago, legwarmers surfaced back on the style radar. This
season, the reborn 鈥80s fad of choice is footless tights or leggings.
Not only have they shown up all over the runways, but they have become
favorite fare of young leading ladies.

What to Wear with Leggings

Mini

Leggings and skirts are truly a dynamic duo. If you have qualms about
showing off your stems, add a pair of leggings in to the mix. Leggings
enable skin-shy women to pull off skirts of all lengths. Choose a color
that coordinates with your top, and keep in mind that dark colors are
always more flattering.

Shirtdresses

Peeking out from a sturdy shirtdress, tights add an extra layer of style,
often in the form of a pattern or color. When it comes to sun dresses and
other breezy numbers, take caution: most flirty frocks are just too light
for tights.

A good rule of thumb is that if the dress demands heels, stick to bare
legs. On the other hand, flats and sandals work, leggings will too.

Tunics

If you want your tights can take the spotlight, pair them with a tunic.
Standard tees and tanks simply won鈥檛 work unless you鈥檙e a model or an
aerobics instructor鈥搈ake sure your top hem touches your upper thigh,
and you鈥檙e good to go.

Flats

High heels tend to look very “retro dance queen”teamed with tights鈥揳nd
not in a good way. Avoid heels of any height and instead opt for ballet
flats, skimmers, moccasins, and slides. With stylish flats, you can pull
off tights with casual ease.

5 – Yao Ming validates his all-star accolades

Yao Ming validates his all-star accolades
by AFP
Updated: 2006-03-18 10:06

HOUSTON, United States (AFP) – There are a lot of people who feel Yao
Ming’s all-star hopes hinge on an internet voting frenzy orchestrated by
his loyal compatriots in China.

But the 25-year-old Yao’s recent performances have silenced his critics
and validated his selection as the starting all-star centre ahead of
Shaquille O’Neal.

“This is the best I have seen him play since he’s been in the league,”
Yao’s Houston Rockets teammate Jason Terry said. “He is playing like a
beast.”

Yao, who was the top vote getter for last month’s National Basketball
Association All-Star Game in Houston, is considered one of the most
dominant players in the game.

And in five of his past six games, Yao has scored 30 or more points and
averaged a superb 32.8 points and 11.2 rebounds.

The Rockets steam towards the playoffs without their other star Tracy
McGrady, who could miss the remainder of the regular season because of a
back injury.

The Shanghai-born Yao is helping fill the void but he’s going to need
some help from his teammates.

While Yao has shot 56 percent in the last three games his teammates have
combined to shoot just 33 percent over the same period.

North America – Rowing

Chinadaily.com.cn sharing the Olympic spirit

Rowing
(Olympic.org)
Updated: 2006-08-19 15:48

?

?Olympic sport since 1896

Tactically, it sounds as ludicrous as sprinting the first five kilometres
of a marathon. To win a 2000-metre rowing race, the crew must sprint for
the first 500 metres.

Such are the demands in the sport of the Athlete of the Century and the
Oarsome Foursome.

Rowing is an endurance test that finishes at a speed of up to 10 metres a
second. Crews cover the middle 1000 metres at about 40 strokes per
minute, but, over the first and last 500 metres, shift up a gear to as
many as 47.

The modern master is Steve Redgrave of Great Britain, widely hailed as
the greatest rower ever. A six-time World Champion, he won gold medals at
the last five Olympic Games and has been loosely crowned Athlete of the
Century.
